The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) helps supplement the diets of low-income Americans, including the elderly, by providing emergency food assistance at no cost to participants.
TEFAP purchases a variety of nutritious United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) foods and makes them available to state distributing agencies, who then distribute to food banks or other local organizations that provide food to low-income families. Foods containing the key nutrients may be available through TEFAP. Nutrition information for all USDA foods is available online through the USDA website.
